An alumnus of Medgar Evers College,
Deborah worked at Medgar Evers College for over 30 years in many capacities from Executive Assistant of the ESL/ESD Program to her retirement position after 17 years as the Director of the Career Management Services Center. Although she was very busy shaping and influencing the educational aspirations of thousands of students over the years, she always put her family first. She was honored and recognized for her dedication to community service. Her passion for supporting and mentoring students has spread throughout her personal life. Deborah had a motto of always helping someone achieve their goals. She was an extremely determined woman. This scholarship commemorates one of Medgar Evers College’s own, Deborah Young, who was the essence of what Medgar Evers College is all about. Her profound commitment to always helping someone was reflected in the immediate and abundant generosity of her dedicated family, friends, colleagues, and the wide range of individuals to whom she dedicated her life. This scholarship is unique because it is the first of its kind for the Community Council for Medgar Evers College, Inc. Deborah Young departed this earth on January 1, 2022. Her mother, Dr. Marcella Maxwell, is one of the founding members of the Community Council for Medgar Evers College, and the Council recognizes the significance of awarding this scholarship in her beloved daughter’s name from generous donations given to honor Deborah Young. The Deborah Young Memorial Scholarship allows her motto of “always helping someone achieve their goals” to continue to be realized.
