The History of Community Council for Medgar Evers College

The Community Council for Medgar Evers College, founded in 1970 and incorporated in 1972, emerged from the vision of ordinary citizens and community leaders in central Brooklyn. Their shared goal was to enhance the quality of life for the people in the area, recognizing the vital need for higher education institutions to empower the community. Their unwavering determination led to successful discussions and negotiations with city and state officials, culminating in the birth of Medgar Evers College. The college was named in honor of the late civil rights leader, Medgar Evers, as a symbol of the struggles faced in establishing an educational institution dedicated to this community’s betterment.

A Presidential Search Committee, comprised of seven residents and organizational representatives from Central Brooklyn, was appointed to find the right leader. In February 1970, Dr. Richard D. Trent became the inaugural President of Medgar Evers College, ushering in a new era of educational excellence.

The Community Council for Medgar Evers College reflects the diversity of the larger community, including residents, organizations, faculty, students, churches, and elected officials from Central Brooklyn. As a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, the Council operates as a tax-exempt entity under the Internal Revenue Code.

Today, the vision and dedication of our founders continue to drive us forward. We remain committed to uplifting the community through meaningful educational initiatives and fostering a supportive environment for growth and success. Together, we strive to honor the legacy of Medgar Evers and build a brighter future for all.
